SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Authorities say a San Bernardino man who was threatening family members with a large kitchen knife was fatally shot when he failed to comply with responding officers and charged at them while still armed with the knife Friday evening, Nov. 27.

Adams Street around 11:39 p.m. after terrified family members called 911 to report a family member was armed with a large kitchen knife and was threatening to stab other family members at the home, San Bernardino Police Sgt. The incident began with a 911 call to police of a man jumping on cars at King Tut Liquors in the 200 block of West Base Line Street. Upon officer’s arrival on the scene, the suspect, identified as Mark Mathhew Bender Jr, who was a 35-year-old convicted felon with a 17-year criminal history that involves charges including attempted murder, theft, false imprisonment, and drug charges was non-compliant and despite officers’ orders, tried to enter the liquor store at 11:15 pm. The unidentified officer then attempted to prevent Bender, who at 6’3″ and over 300 pounds was substantially bigger than the officer from entering the liquor store.
