SUSPECT ARRESTED IN SHOOTING OF TWO WISCONSIN POLICE OFFICERS
Waukesha County, WI – Two police officers were shot after 1 am on Friday November 6 when they were responding to a call about a hit and run.
The two officers shot were with Hartland and Delafield Police Departments. They responded to a call at a Holiday Inn Express on Golf Road when the suspect, Nathanael Benton, opened fire.
The officer from Delafield returned fire before Benton took off on foot. There were two other suspects from Warsaw, Indiana in the vehicle who were taken into police custody.
Benton had a warrant out for his arrest in Fargo North Dakota for attempted murder. After fleeing on foot a massive manhunt was underway to find Benton.
Authorities issued an alert, warning residents to stay in their homes and not approach the suspect if they saw him.
Interstate 94 was shut down for hours as multiple law enforcement agencies worked relentlessly to locate Benton who was armed and dangerous.
Benton was eventually found in a field on the far side of Delafield, Wisconsin.
“Police men and women that were all surrounding this like field all the way up here and all the way around, kind of converged on him and took him down. He was just apprehended right back here and there was just tons of police officers everywhere. It was very comforting to feel that everything was under control.”
– Owen Cieslak resident of Delafield
Benton is currently being held in Waukesha County Jail.
The two officers who were shot were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for non life threatening injuries.
