Second Officer Working US Capitol Violence Dies, Reportedly by Suicide
Washington, DC – It was confirmed on Sunday that a second US Capitol Police Officer has died. Officer Howard Liebengood, at the age of 51 years, has died by suicide following the events at the Capitol on January 6.
Officer Liebengood was a 15-year veteran of the department and was serving in the Senate division. He was off-duty when he died.
Capitol Police Union Chairman Gus Papathanasiou said in a statement, “Every Capitol Police Officer puts the security of others before their own safety and Officer Liebengood was an example of the selfless service that is the hallmark of USCP. This is a tragic day.”
It’s been reported that Officer Liebengood was the son of Senate Sergeant-At-Arms Howard S. Liebengood.
