A man was shot and killed by a Batesville, Indiana officer following a standoff that started at 8 a.m. Monday morning in Batesville.

The initial call for service was related to an ongoing domestic disturbance at a residence on Bridlewood Trace according to a release from the Indiana State Police.

A mother and three small children who were inside the house when the situation began were able to escape the house safely before the man barricaded himself inside the residence.

The male reportedly fired on officers arriving for the initial call for service, injuring one officer who was struck by flying wood after a round impacted close by the officer’s head before the man retreated inside the residence in the garage.

The male remained inside the residence as negotiators made contact with the male, who continued to discharge a weapon from inside the residence.

The male later moved outside the residence while still armed and refusing to drop his weapon. Officers on the scene opened fire on the male who was taken to an area hospital but later died from his injuries.

The Indiana State Police will be investigating the case and will provide further information as it becomes available.
