Atlanta Police Officer Involved in Off Duty Shooting

by Ryan MasonNovember 16, 2020

An unidentified officer from the Atlanta Police Department has been involved in a shooting overnight in downtown Atlanta.

The shooting occurred at 150 Pine St NE at an address allegedly housing UP Restaurant and Bar in downtown Atlanta at approximately 4 a.m. near the entrance to the club after a dispute began between a patron and a security guard.

The officer involved was not working at the club, instead, working an off-duty employment detail nearby when he responded after shots rang out.

“It is not clear at this point who shot whom, but three people were shot in the incident. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, one person was taken to the hospital in serious condition but expected to survive, and one person suffered a minor injury. The officer was not injured,” said Atlanta Police Spokesman Officer Steve Avery.
As is standard procedure with officer-involved shootings, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will be handling the investigation into the shooting, later identifying those shot as Frederick Demor Asberry, 25, of Douglasville, who died, while other people shot during the incident were Byron Heron, 33, and Andrew Smith. Heron has been released from the hospital while Smith remains in critical condition.
