Helena-West Helena, Ark. –  A Helena-West Helena Police officer was fatally shot on Thursday night while attempting to take a suspect into custody for a prior shooting charge at the Delta Inn Motel in West Helena, Ark.

The officer has been identified as 41-year-old Travis Wallace, who had been on the Department for 5 years. Wallace is survived by a 10-year-old son.

Police say that Officer Wallace had stopped an SUV and the suspect exited the vehicle firing a weapon. Wallace was able to return fire, but was fatally shot.

Police identified the suspect as 29-year-old Latarius Howard, who fled the scene initially. Howard was arrested several hours later.  An additional suspect, 24-year-old Bruce Hillie, was also arrested.  Howard is charged with 1st Degree Murder of a Police Officer. Hillie has been charged with hindering apprehension.

“Officer Travis Wallace is one of our own, and one of our best. He died courageously in the commission of his job, protecting and serving our community,” said Helena-West Helena Mayor Smith. “This cuts deep for all of us. My heart breaks for the family of Officer Wallace. This tragic loss is also a loss for his colleagues, for our family at City Hall, and for our entire community. My wife, Sissy, and I knew Travis. She saw him earlier this week at the school where she teaches, as he did his job looking out for school children.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer’s family, department, and community.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
